New £240k sports pitch for Rye Hills Academy and Redcar Hockey Club

We are delighted to announce that Rye Hills Academy and players from Redcar Hockey Club will soon benefit from a new, all-weather sports pitch thanks to a successful bid to Redcar and Cleveland Council's levelling up fund.

Our successful joint bid with Redcar Hockey Club has paved the way for a large investment that will significantly enhance sports facilities at Rye Hills Academy and facilitate the welcome return of Redcar Hockey Club to their home turf.

The state-of-the-art pitch, which can accommodate a wide variety of sports including football, cricket, and rugby to name a few, will ensure year-round usage, irrespective of weather conditions with the durable, high-quality surface making it an ideal venue for school tournaments and community sporting events.

Headteacher at Rye Hills Academy, Hijab Zaheer, expressed his excitement over the planned development:

"This pitch will be a fantastic boost for the school. It will reinstate our commitment to sport and go a long way in helping promote enjoyment of a range of activities amongst our students. We are also thrilled to welcome back Redcar Hockey Club and believe this will strengthen the bond between the school and the community. The project underscores a brilliant collaborative effort to improve local sporting infrastructure and promote healthy, active lifestyles and I can't wait for work to get started."

Chair of Redcar Hockey Club, Stephen Russell, added his enthusiasm:

"Redcar Hockey Club, established in 1887, is delighted to be able to play in Redcar again, thanks to the help and support from Redcar and Cleveland Council, Rye Hills Academy and the North East Learning Trust.

“The new pitch will have a positive impact on the local community. With this investment, the club eagerly anticipates a future where sports are played together, families engage in active lifestyles, and the community thrives.

“Five years playing home games at across Tees Valley have been a strain on club development, impacting on retention and recruitment of players. We look forward to returning to Rye Hills and are excited to re-start coaching sessions with school pupils."
